Suicide in the Elderly

Abstract
Suicide rate in the elderly has been increasing rapidly in Korea. Older men, isolated person, axis I disorders, no job, low economic state and poor medical conditions are at higher risk of suicide. Suicide risk assessments are important to suicide prevention. Depression has the strongest influence on suicide ideation and attempts. Early detection for depression is needed for early treatment. Many kind of early detection programs are necessary for prevention of suicide. Also many researches for neurobiology of elderly suicide must be preceded. Pharmacological and psychological treatments, family support, cognitive behavioral therapy, interpersonal therapy and problem solving therapy are required for elderly depressive person. Multidimensional suicide prevention program for Korean elders and educating physicians about depression recognition, treatment, and restricting access to lethal methods reduce suicide rates. It is need to develop a structured systemized educational program like gatekeepers and social support programs.
